and who is Necessity's mother?

They are ugly, they are not well-made, and they are weird, but I needed them and I love them. All this snow removal is cold, wet work, especially if you only have a pair of pink fleece gloves. I needed mittens.

During the power outage of the last blizzard, I got to work. I used a Big Knits pattern from Rowan, and some crazy slub yarn that I bought in Florence several years ago. I just happened to have the right size needles as well. It took me maybe two hours to knit and finish them. The seam is lumpy, they are not the same size, but they are very warm and have become my favorite (and only) mittens.

They are beautiful in their own way. Like an evening sky mottled with moonlit high clouds. And it's very glamorous that the yarn was hand chosen in Florence.

Thanks for seeing the beauty in my purple smoke mittens. I have a few more skeins I got during that trip -- I got really excited about Florence's history as a center of wool production. Sadly, I bought yarn without a clue as to what I'd be making with it, so I either got too much or not enough.
